It seems only yesterday that we were in a similar situation as John F. Kennedy’s actions threatened Cuba during the Bay of Pigs crisis. The threat of all out nuclear war between the USA and Russia was on the table as a result. The question is whether this North Korean crisis is any different? As in 1962 a dictator of a relatively small nation is proving a threat to the mighty power of North America.
Is this situation any different or are we heading down the same path? In 1961 Kennedy inherited the situation from Dwight D. Eisenhower, his predecessor, who had ordered the CIA to finance and train a group of Cuban exiles with the aim of overthrowing Castro. The latter had seized power in a revolution staged in January 1959.
US companies and interests in Cuba were targeted and Castro’s anti-American rhetoric and other things had inspired Eisenhower to attempt the overthrow. On the other side, however, Cuba was prepared for the assault when it happened on Kennedy’s watch in 1962.
As the poorly armed exiles landed they were met with counter-attacks from the Cuban military and their supply ships were sunk. While the USA expected the people of the island nation would rise up in support of the invasion it didn’t happen. Instead Russia stepped in and sent missiles and built suitable bases to stop another attempt at military intervention.
The newly elected President lost considerable prestige in his own country and the threat of nuclear war was greatly escalated. So what is the difference now with the current situation.
Trump is also newly elected. Like Kennedy he has promised an invasion of North Korea to ward off a threat to the Western allies and ultimately to the USA. Russia is standing by and will no doubt support the goals of the dictator whose regime is strictly controlled and will stand behind him.
China has not complied with requests to stop trade with the country and Kim Jong-un appears well pleased with the crisis he has created. No matter how much they have pleaded with those who could assist to stop him he continues to push harder to achieve his goal.
Trump has put himself out there with his high-handed threats and to back away from them is not in his character. Now he has declared that efforts to get China to help with the crisis has failed. Will he, like Kennedy, order an invasion and will Russia and China go to the aid of North Korea or stand aside.
Russia quickly went into Syria to support Assad, another dictator that has threatened world peace. It has supplied him with weapons and support by the Russian military so can it afford to do the same for North Korea?
Some say no! The reason is that the Russian economy is badly affected and it cannot wage such a war against the USA. It is, however, meddling in elections in the western nations, including the USA. Where this will lead is anyone’s guess at this time but the chances of an all-out invasion by the USA and its allies into North Korea is looking more likely by the day.
We are in the end times, no matter what happens. Whether nuclear war starts on the Korean peninsula or elsewhere has little bearing on what is now inevitable. From the time when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan on August 6th, 1945 leaders of all nations have been facing the day when a nuclear war is inevitable.
Treading carefully through the diplomatic and good-neighbour policies of governments takes skill and Trump does not have that in him. Old Testament prophecies have explained the plan to bring the world to an end and it looks like they are coming true:
“And the slain of God shall be at that day from one end of the earth… unto the other… they shall be as dung on the ground.” Jeremiah 26:33
That is a frightening promise but already there are instances of such in the East where the dead are so numerous that burial is almost impossible. Aleppo in Syria is one such place. The bombs that rained down on the people were indiscriminate in their targets and deadly in effect.
Is this what the next episode of history will record? The question is whether there will be anyone alive to record it? Is the North Korean Crisis and Trump the triggers to bring it about? Meanwhile the world will continue to hold its breath as we wait to see.
